Manchester City manager Manuel
Pellegrini’s decision to field a number of first team regulars came back to haunt him within the first 10 minutes of tuesday night’s League Cup quarter-final at Leicester City, when defender Pablo Zabaleta limped off.
The Argentina international appeared to suffer a hamstring injury and, after walking straight down the tunnel, he was replaced by Dedryck Boyata. With fellow right-back Micah Richards also
sidelined with a hamstring ailment, the title hopefuls are down to the bare bones and it was a gamble to field Zabaleta tonight. City now face being without one of their
most consistent performers for the
festive period, having already lost striker Sergio Agüero for a month due to a calf injury.
This latest blow represents a major blow to City’s domestic ambitions. They face high-flying Liverpool on Boxing Day at the Etihad Stadium and it looks a tall order for
Zabaleta to recover in time to feature.
